Amazing Urban Locations in Indianapolis to take Portraits

The right type of location and setting helps define the look and feel of your photos and can make a dramatic difference in the outcome of your session. Even though my absolute favorite place to capture people is in my studio or clients home/office (because that is where your story all began!) … there are still many other wonderful locations all around Indianapolis. Check out my list below. I’ve separated them into natural and urban locations. Make sure to check out the natural locations here.

Urban Locations for Photo Sessions

1. Monument Circle, Downtown Indianapolis, Indiana

Downtown at the circle is the perfect urban setting. The circle provides several settings from its limestone stairs, to the two large fountain pools with the state house in the background and various shops. The architecture and symmetry presented here allow for some iconic and modern settings for your photos. 

2. Lockerbie Square, Downtown Indianapolis, Indiana

Lockerbie Square was Downtown's first historic district in the National Register of Historic Places. It's a vibrant neighborhood with tree-lined cobblestone and brick streets and renovated houses - from cozy cottages to mansions, rich with history and charm, it makes a great backdrop for a photo session.

3. White River State Park, Downtown Indianapolis, Indiana

The White River State Park offers a unique blend of green space with an amazing view of the Indy skyline, it's an amazing place to be! It's close to a bunch of museums, you can walk around, sit, pedal on the water, or bike around it.

4. Cake Bake Shop in Broad Ripple Village in Indianapolis, Indiana

The French-inspired shop is decorated with glistening marble, sparkling gilded mirrors and it is the absolutely perfect location for sophisticated, light and airy family photos. Giving children an activity to do during a session always creates the most natural images, and what family wouldn’t want to share a slice of cake?

5. Indianapolis Public Library, Downtown Indianapolis, Indiana

One of my favorite activities when I was a child was visiting our local library. What better place to capture a trip with your family? The Indianapolis Public Library has great architecture, wonderful courtyard area, and a beautiful view of the Indy skyline.

6. Hamilton Town Center, Noblesville, Indiana

HTC, or Hamilton Town Center, is an extraordinary open-air streetscape environment that showcases a diverse mix of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. If you take family shopping trips this would be a fun location to document and capture your family in a session.

7. Historic Downtown Noblesville, Indiana

Downtown Noblesville has a charm to it and a relaxing atmosphere. It offers some of the best and most unique shopping, dining, and entertainment attractions. Whether your family is searching for the perfect antique, or having some ice cream at the old-fashioned ice cream parlor, it would make a perfect backdrop for your family photo session and will be a cherished memory.

8. Carmel Arts & Design District, Carmel, Indiana

In the heart of Old Town Carmel, the Arts and Design District is home to interior designers, art galleries, showrooms, restaurants, and antique stores. Let me capture your family walking down the monon or down the street that is lined with a variety of speciality shops after having a burger at Bubs and it will be photos that will you and your children will look back on fondly.

There are just so many great spots in the Indianapolis area!
